The Figures

Here we have Mysterio from two different eras; Toybiz and Hasbro.

Toybiz Mysterio is from the Spider-man Classics line from way back 2005. He comes with a white base that has wheels beneath it (so you can push him when he stands on it), with a pair of orange funny-looking missiles to be locked and loaded at the front of it. There is also a button at the back that protrudes out of the cape that can be pressed to change his face.

Hasbro Mysterio is from the Lizard BAF Wave in 2018. It comes with two green smokey effects that wraps around the leg well, or can be used for other poses too.

Hasbro Mysterio has a green head and white head variant; you can check out the variants here.

Here’s a view of the cape. The Toybiz Mysterio has more folds on the cape, and sways to the left. Hasbro Mysterio has a more relaxed looking cape.

Differences

Here is Toybiz Mysterio on his base. There is a button to click to release both missiles. He stands firmly and sturdy as there are peg holes on the base to attach his feet to.

The figure is textured, with a black wash. It does not have an ab crunch and neck articulation.

The effects are meant to be attacked on the feet like the above, but I’ve seen some toy photography that puts that effect to other good use.

The suit has sculpted lines, which is awesome. I’m glade Hasbro decided to that instead of using black lines. I like the sculpt on the gloves too.

One thing that the Toybiz Spider-man Classics figures had were gimmick actions and accessories, and Toybiz Mysterio is no different. The gimmick action from pressing that ugly protruding button at the back makes his head swivel and change.

He has 3 faces; Quentin Beck unmasked face, an alien-looking face and a monster-looking face. I don’t know what’s the point of the gimmick since the helmet is tinted dark, it’s actually quite difficult to see the heads clearly.

Another thing about the helmet is that it is dome in shape instead of circular like a fishbowl.

Hasbro Mysterio has the skull with a tentacle through the eyes and mouth. The bowl head and cape is connected as a single piece. The bowl head really resembles a fishbowl. Lol.

I actually find Hasbro did a better sculpting for the gloves than Toybiz. Toybiz Mysterio’s glove sculpt is subtle and can only be seen clearly up close. I also dislike those useless finger articulation from Toybiz figures.

The yellow gloves and gold boots look decent, but Mysterio is usually seen with a green gloves and boots in the comics.

TL;DR

Toybiz Mysterio (Spider-man Classics Series 13):

+ Sculpted suit

– Head too dome-like instead of bowl-like

– No ab crunch

– Head changing gimmick useless as the dome head is tinted quite dark, and the gimmick is also useless regardless

– Yellow gloves and gold boots less comic accurate

– Button coming out from the cape at the back of the figure is ugly.

Hasbro Mysterio (Lizard BAF Wave):

+ Bowl head

+ Green gloves and boots more comic accurate

+ Green smokey effect is useful

+ Better articulation (has ab crunch, and better hand peg joint and ankle rockers)

+ Better sculpt on gloves

– May be difficult to pose besides vanilla pose as cape is stiff

– An alternate head would have been great

My Verdict

Marvel Legends - Toybiz Mysterio (Spider-man Classics Series 13) vs Hasbro Mysterio (Lizard BAF Wave)

I definitely prefer the Hasbro Mysterio over Toybiz. The colour scheme, effect, bowl head and sculpt on body and gloves are great. The cape does restrict posing of the figure though, but I still like the figure a lot.

The difference between the Hasbro Mysterio variant is minimal, but I like the challenge of hunting these variants down. Check them out here.
