Marvel Legends – Iron Man (Vintage Wave) vs Iron Man (Epic Heroes Wave)

The Figures

Here we have Iron Man, in an armour widely known as Neo-classic Iron Man. If you google Classic Iron Man, and Neo-classic Iron Man, you would yield different results.

The figures are similar, bar a few obvious differences. The 2 main differences are the armour ‘boots’ and the paintwork. The Vintage Wave Neo-classic Iron Man also has 2 blast effects, whereas the Epic Heroes Neo Classic Iron Man does not come with any accessories.

They have their hand sculpts on opposite sides too; fist on the right and repulsor blast hands on the left for the Vintage Wave Iron man, and vice versa for the Epic Heroes Iron Man.

It’s actually quite difficult to make the Epic Heroes Iron man to stand with both his feet flat on the ground. You can see they have the same body mold from head to the knees.

They have the same articulation except for the ankles; Vintage Wave Iron Man has ankle rocker joints whereas the Epic Heroes Iron Man has hinge joints for the ankles.

Differences

First off, the paintwork. The new Vintage Wave Iron Man has matt red with gold and a yellow arc reactor on the chest, while the Epic Heroes has glossy red with shinier gold paintwork and a gold arc reactor on the chest. The glossy paintwork on the Epic Heroes Iron Man looks decent, but some parts of the red may start to fade or become slightly sticky on your figure over time. Mine has a faded right boot (see first pic at the top of the post).

Next, the hands. The hands of the Vintage Wave Iron Man is more proportionate to the body. The Epic Heroes Iron Man hands kinda looks slightly too small for the figure.

The red armour gauntlet on the forearms are also differently sculpted. The Vintage Wave Iron Man’s forearm gauntlet has gap which shows the gold part of the armour.

The Epic Heroes Iron Man forearm gauntlet is red all around and is visibly bigger.

I prefer the Vintage Wave Iron Man’s arm over the Epic Heroes Iron Man.

Same goes for the fists. Vintage Wave Iron Man has a more well-rounded fist than the kinda flattened fist of the Epic Heroes Iron Man. The yellow hinge joint of the Epic Heroes Iron Man is also somewhat displeasing to the eyes.

Now this. I feel the Vintage Wave Iron Man is more comic accurate than the Epic Heroes Iron Man. The bulky boots of the Epic Heroes Iron Man actually makes it slightly difficult to stand. Bigger doesn’t always mean better. Heh. What is the use of having such a big calf armour anyways?

Because of the huge boots, the feet can’t tilt upwards enough, result in it being slightly difficult to make the figure stand in the vanilla pose (just standing upright).

Look at that size difference!

TL;DR

Iron Man (Vintage Wave):

+ Matt red and gold paintwork

+ Comes with 2 blast effects

+ Better sculpted forearm gauntlets and armour boots

+ Hands more proportionate to the body

+ Ankle rocker joints

Iron Man (Epic Heroes Wave):

– Shiny red and gold paintwork; red paintwork may fade or become sticky

– No accessories

– Oversized forearm gauntlets and boots

– Hands looks small in proportion to the body

– difficult to make it stand, and I doubt it can stand with both feet flat on the ground

My Verdict

To me, Vintage Wave Iron Man wins this one hands down. Although have shiny paintwork is quite nice, the risk of it fading and becoming sticky is not that we would want.

This Neo-classic Iron Man armour from the Vintage wave is actually a very decent figure.
