Marvel Legends – Hobgoblin BAF Wave Spider-man 2099 (Authentic vs KO)
Left: KO Spider-man 2099 Right: Authentic Spider-man 2099 (Hobgoblin BAF Wave)
Spider-man 2099 has been one of my favourite version of Spider-man. I really like his costume design and the mask, and I dig the web cape. And couple with the fact that he’s not Peter Parker makes him interesting.
Toybiz made a Spider-man 2099 in the Spider-man Classics Series which predates the Marvel Legends Series. When Hasbro took over, they also did another Spider-man 2099 in the Spider-man Origins Series, but that figure really sucks.
This Hasbro Spider-man 2099 is really great, making use of the Pizza Spider-man body mold. The red eyes on the mask are also sculpted, it is slightly elevated from the surface of the head. The red skull logo on the chest is painted.
I’ve heard of the non-authentic Spider-man 2099 for quite a while, but it took me quite a while before getting it. I started to get curious as to the differences and decided to get one.
Its actually very hard to tell the figure apart, the KO is really similar to the original. I really have to scrutinize the figure to look for differences. It was easier to tell the KO Pizza Spidey apart from the original.
One main and obvious difference though, is the web cape. The original cape is clear, as if made from hot glue. The KO cape has a slight tinge of grey; it is very slightly (but also clearly) darker than the original.
It still looks ok though, and can be used if you lost your original Spidey 2099 web cape.
Unlike the KO Pizza Spider-man, the ball peg of the head joint looks the same. The whole body mold really looks the same and there is no obvious differences except for the serial number which I’m gonna talk about next.
This is another obvious difference, although I would like to know if any other people who own the KO has this same thing.
The serial number for the original is in line with the knee hinge joint, as shown with the lines I edited in above. I have three authentic Spider-man 2099 (though two are pictured above), and all three of them are consistent with the serial number being in line with the knee hinge joint.
For the KO however, the serial number is slightly off to the right, so it is not in line with the hinge joint (as shown in the left most picture above).
Another thing also, is that the back of the thigh, around the serial number, is silvery for the KO. However, I don’t know if this is a consistent thing for all KO or just my piece.
+ Clear translucent web cap
+ Serial number behind the thigh is above and in line with the knee hinge joint
KO Spider-man 2099:
+ Cape is translucent but slightly darker
+ Serial number behind the thigh is above but not in line with the knee hinge joint
– The back of the thigh area around the serial number is silvery in colour
The KO is actually almost exactly the same as the original, and it’s quite difficult to differentiate without having the original in hand. I can tell the difference between KO Pizza Spidey and the original without having to compare it side by side, but for Spider-man 2099, it really is quite tough.
I think the main giveaway is the position of the serial number and the silvery back of the left thigh, but I do wonder if it’s a consistent thing for all KOs. Anyone with a KO Spider-man 2099 (or you bought it loose without knowing it’s authenticity) comment here to see if your KO is the same?
