Marvel Legends – Hasbro Scarlet Spider (Rhino BAF Wave) vs Hasbro Scarlet Spider (Vintage Wave)
Here we have the two Marvel Legends Scarlet Spider figures; one from the Rhino BAF Wave(2015) and the other from the Vintage Wave (2018). The body mold is exactly the same except for the paintwork and accessories as seen in the picture above.
The Rhino Scarlet Spider comes with 3 pairs of hands (fists, wall-crawling and web-shooting hands), while the Vintage Wave Scarlet Spider comes with 2 pairs of hands (fists and web-shooting hands) and unmasked head. The unmasked head is really cool.
From the front and back view above, it can be seen that the spider logo on the blue vest is different in size. The colour of the belt and pouches are also two different shades of brown.
The eyes of the Rhino BAF Wave Scarlet Spider has a black outline. I prefer the Vintage Wave Scarlet Spider eyes. Its more comic accurate without the black outline. Without the outline, it also defines the edges better, especially at the nose bridge area and the top corner.
The red paintwork is obviously different. Personally I prefer the Rhino Wave red than the darker and shinier Vintage Scarlet Spider red. The blue vest also has a slightly different shade of blue.
The web-shooters are also different. The Vintage Wave Scarlet Spider has the more comic accurate multi-cylinderical webshooters. I only wish it has the same silver paint as the Rhino Wave Scarlet Spider instead of being plastic gray.
This, of course, is a winner. Ben Reilly unmasked head. In the comic however, Ben Reilly didn’t dye his hair yellow till he got the new Spider-man suit. The unmasked head is a reused from the Spidey in Spider-man/Mary Jane 2-pack TRU Exclusive, but with yellow hair instead of brown.
Rhino BAF Wave Scarlet Spider:
+ Brighter red paintwork
+ Darker shade of brown for belt and pouches
+ Slightly lighter shade of blue for the vest
+ 3 pairs of hands (fists, wall-crawling and web-shooting hands)
+ Smaller spider logo on vest
– Black outlines for the eyes
– Webshooters not comic accurate
Vintage Wave Scarlet Spider:
+ Darker red paintwork
+ Lighter shade of brown for belt and pouches
+ Slightly darker shade of blue for vest
+ Unmasked head
+ Comic accurate webshooters
+ No black outline on the eyes
+ Bigger spider logo on vest
– 2 pairs of hands (fists and web-shooting hands)
Between these two, I prefer the colour scheme of the Rhino BAF Wave Scarlet Spider. The black outline of the eyes is a slight let down, but can be quite easily customized. The extra pair of hands is definitely a plus point too.
However, the unmasked head from the Vintage Wave Scarlet Spider is also a need if you are a Spider-man fan. You’ll need to get both unless you don’t mind the paintwork of the Vintage Wave Scarlet Spider.
I’m definitely keeping both! 😄
Left: Scarlet Spider (Rhino BAF Wave) Right: Ben Reilly Spider-man (Absorbing Man BAF Wave)
For me, I attached the Ben Reilly head to the Ben Reilly costume, as in the comics, Ben never dyed his hair yellow when he was wearing the Scarlet Spider costume.
I used Anakin’s head from Star Wars Black Series and sand off the scar at the eye for the unmasked head of Scarlet Spider. He did have long hair for a period of time during the Clone Saga storyline.
