The Figures

Here we have Cyclops in his early rendition of his costume. Toybiz released it in the Sentinel BAF Wave back in 2005, and Hasbro released the same character in 2017 in a 2-pack together with Dark Phoenix. The new Cyclops uses the Bucky Cap mold. Toybiz does reuse body molds occasionally, but this Toybiz Cyclops is a unique body mold.

Both of them are about the same height, but the Toybiz Cyclops looks bigger, mostly due to its wider torso (because of his bigger chest) and bigger head sculpt.

The paintwork is also different; Toybiz Cyclops has a slightly darker blue and yellow with a lot of black wash. Hasbro Cyclops has brighter yellow and dark blue costumes.

Differences

Both of them have a peg hole at the back. As per all figures with the Bucky Cap mold, it has a hole somewhere in the middle of the back in order to attached Bucky Captain America’s shield. The whole is of cos redundant for other characters.

Toybiz Cyclops has the whole at his lower back. The hole is for using the Toybiz figure stand that came with the figure.

The joints and articulation are almost the same, except the Hasbro has an ab crunch whereas the Toybiz Cyclops has no ab crunch (the torso is one solid piece), and Hasbro Cyclops has the well improved ankle rocker joint.

As mentioned earlier, you can see that the Toybiz Cyclops has a bigger head mold. The Toybiz Cyclops also have thickly sculpted visors. It makes his head look even more big.

Hasbro Cyclops’ belt is a separate piece with sits on the figure’s waist snugly while the Toybiz Cyclop’s belt is painted on.

The Hasbro Cyclops has a right fist, and a left hand with 2 fingers out for activate his optic blasts. The Toybiz Cyclops has hands whereby 4 fingers are able to move together. Not really a well-though joint, in my opinion.

The Toybiz Cyclops’ gloves and boots were given a black wash and it makes them look weathered. The boots look a tad too big.

TL;DR

Hasbro Cyclops (2-pack with Dark Phoenix TRU Exclusive):

+ Bucky Cap body mold

+ Ab crunch and ankle rocker joints

+ Better head sculpt

+ Belt is a separate piece, snugly fit on the waist

+ No black wash; ‘clean’ look of the attire fits in with the current figures

Toybiz Cyclops (Sentinel BAF Wave):

– Body mold looks big due to big chest

– No ab crunch, outdated ankle joints

– Head looks big, and the sculpt of the visor looks too thick

– Belt is painted on the waist

– Black wash on gloves and boots; ‘rugged’ look does not fit in well with current figures

My Verdict

Hands down Hasbro Cyclops for the win. Getting the 2-pack however, may be quite costly due to the Phoenix figure. The Toybiz Cyclops never had much value on its on (when MOSC, or brand new in packaging, it costs higher mostly due to the Sentinel BAF part). Toybiz Cyclops also looks like he’s wearing diapers. Heh.

I think both figures can still be found in the secondary market (from local comic/toy shops or toy forums). It costs a bomb on Amazon as of the day I posted this.
