Marvel Legends – Hasbro Ben Reilly Spider-man (Absorbing Man BAF Wave) vs Hasbro Ben Reilly Spider-man (Ares BAF Wave)

The Figures

Here we have the two Ben Reilly Spider-man; the newer version from Absorbing Man BAF wave (2016) and the first version from Ares BAF wave back in 2007. To me, the newer versions of most characters that Hasbro has re-released had made the early years of Hasbro figures obsolete.

Just a little bit of character info. Ben Reilly is a clone of the original Spider-man (Peter Parker). He was a clone, who was revealed to be the original, and then revealed again to be the clone. He started off as Scarlet Spider before changing to this costume when he ‘found out’ that he was the original; only to die and revealed to be the clone. Yeah, complicated I know. The whole event took place in the mid to late 90s, in the infamous Clone Saga story line. I personally liked that story line. Ben Reilly appeared again in the 2014 ‘Spider-verse’ story line, hence the re-release of this character.

Differences

The new Ben Spidey uses the pizza Spidey body mold. It is slightly taller than the Ares Ben Spidey, and looks better when placed with other recent Spidey figures. The new Ben Spidey also has a darker shade of blue which is more comic accurate.

For whatever reason, the Ares Ben Spidey has a head with engraved web lines on the mask. The rest of the black web lines on the torso are just painted. I find it a bit of a mismatch.

One win for the Ares Ben Spidey is that the web shooters has a metallic finish to it. The new Ben Spidey has a pair plastic-ky gray web shooters. It would definitely look better with a metallic silver paint.

The new Ben Spidey comes with a lot of accessories; a pair of fists, a pair of open-fingered hands, a pair of web-shooting hands, a pair of Spider-carnage claws and Spider-carnage head. It’s really awesome of Hasbro to include the Spider-carnage parts. Ares Ben Spidey does not come with any accessory at all.

The update body mold of the new Ben Spidey means it has better articulation than the Ares Ben Spidey. The new Ben Spidey has butterfly shoulder joints, ball joints connecting the leg to the hips and ankle rocker joint which allows for better posing and articulation. You can see the awkwardness of the Ares Ben Spidey in the pose above.

This is the new Ben Spidey with the Spider-carnage parts. It would look more awesome if red veins were customed to the whole body just like in the comics.

TL;DR

The new Absorbing Man wave Ben Reilly Spider-man:

– multiple pairs of hands

– Spider-carnage head

– better articulation

– more comic accurate with the darker blue tone

Ares wave Ben Reilly Spider-man

– metallic painted web shooters looks better than the new Ben Spidey

My Verdict

Hands down, the new Absorbing Man wave Ben Reilly Spider-man wins between these two. It makes the Ares Ben Spidey obsolete. If you are looking for this version of the Spidey costume, get the new Ben Spidey. Period.
