The Figures

Here are both Marvel Legends Guardian by Hasbro.

The Ares BAF Wave Guardian is from way back in 2008 and the Wendigo BAF Wave Guardian just came out in 2019.

Both of them do not come with any accessories.

They have similar costume design. The Ares Guardian has a blue wash, giving him a shade of blue throughout the white part of the figure, but the Wendigo Guardian white parts are purely white.

For my figure, the Ares Guardian groin/butt area suffers from some yellowing, lol.

Differences

Left: Guardian (Ares BAF Wave) Right: Guardian (Wendigo BAF Wave)

Whether from the front, side or back, the Wendigo Guardian is clearly taller. He is also more buff.

Ares Guardian uses the Bullseye body. His neck protrudes forward too much. From the side, you can also see that his foot is also kinda long, even longer than the Wendigo Guardian. He ais

The Wendigo Guardian has a more expression, looking stern with the mouth inverted downwards. Both of them has the black outline around their eyes.

I find Ares Guardian’s head to be small and not proportionate to the body. My Ares Guardian also has a yellowing crotch. Not sure if it’s a common problem for the figure, but it has been known to happen to a few white coloured early Hasbro figures.

The edges of the Maple leaf design on the torso is also different. I find the Ares Guardian’s Maple leaf design to have more likeness to the leaf on the Canada flag than the Wendigo Guardian.

The Wendigo Guardian also did away (as most of the recent Hasbro figures) with the ball hip joints, and has ankle rocker joint in place. He may be missing the butterfly shoulder joints, but I find that he is still well articulated.

Same goes for the back. I find Ares Guardian has a better Maple leaf design than the Wendigo Guardian. You can see his yellowing butt too, lol.

Wendigo Guardian has that hole at the back, as it is a reused body. I can’t remember from which character though.

This is one trait of Toybiz that I dislike greatly, which is the articulated finger. Individually articulated straight fingers are already unappealing to me, but 4 fingers joint together that flaps up and down really takes the cake. I’d rather have interchangeable pair of hands like fists or open grip hands.

TL;DR

Guardian (Ares BAF Wave):

+ Maple leaf design has more likeness to Canada’s flag

+ Has a blue wash over the white parts of the costume

– Smaller in size

– Small head

– Long feet

– Neck protruding forward

– Useless finger joints

Guardian (Wendigo BAF Wave):

+ Bigger body mold

+ White parts of costume are clean, with no wash of any colour

+ No more ball hip joint, has ankle rocker

+ Fists instead of having any sort of finger joint

– No alternate hands or any other accessories

My Verdict

Marvel Legends - Guardian (Ares BAF Wave) vs Guardian (Wendigo BAF Wave)
Left: Guardian (Ares BAF Wave) Centre: Vindicator (Alpha Flight Box Set) Right: Guardian (Wendigo BAF Wave)

The Guardian (Wendigo BAF Wave) is definitely a big improvement over the early Hasbro Guardian (Ares BAF Wave). His bigger size fits the character better and I prefer him in clean white instead of having the blue wash. He also scales better with Vindicator from the Alpha Flight box set.
