The Figures

Yessssss! The time has arrived for the new Big Time Spider-man! I was excited when it was announced, and now that I’ve gotten my hands on it, it really looks great! It comes with the same 3 set of hands as Pizza Spidey, which is great, as Scarlet Spider from the Vintage wave only got 2 out of the 3 pairs of hands. It also comes with the web line, which has become pretty much standard item in Spidey figures (House of M and Gamerverse Spider-man got it too).

This costume came from the ‘Big Time’ story line, which is the story arc right after they erased Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s marriage in the ‘One More Day’ story line a few years back. Damn I still hate that their marriage was erased from existence and made it that they never got married in the first place.

Anyways, back to the figure. The Big Time let down Spider-man (as many calls it) from the Rocket Raccoon wave uses the same body mold as the first Kaine Scarlet Spider, and is a variant of the Future Foundation Spider-man. The suit is supposed to have a black base with green lines, but the Big Time let down has green colour ’emitting’ from the lines. I guess they were trying to make it ‘glowy’ or something, but it simply looks awful.

To top it off, its promotional pictures before the official release of the figure does not have the green emitting paintwork, and looks a hundred times better.

Look at the back of Big Time let down Spidey. Is he wearing a green vest?

Differences

Above: Big Time Spider-man (80th Anniversary)

The 80th Anniversary Big Time Spidey has a different shade of green from the Big Time let down. The lines are mostly painted quite straight and clean. The eyes are also actually slightly sculpted, unlike the Pizza Spidey which is just painted.

The green line design is more comic accurate, from the chest area, to the back.

I really wish the recent Hasbro figures have the serial number at the sole of the foot instead of be obviously visible at the back of the thigh like that.

Big Time let down Spidey has those green lines, but the body is also painted green-ish over black. I think they meant it for some sort of glowing effect, but it really is terrible, especially when the promo pics of it before its release does not have the green paintwork over the black body.

I do like the sculpt of the eyes for this body mold though.

And those ball-like joints at the hips gotta go. Its easier to pose the pizza Spidey body mold (even though it cannot do a wide leg split).

The spider symbol at the back is also small. And from behind, the green paintwork makes him look like he’s wearing a green vest.

Above is another problem of the body mold of the Big Time let down Spidey. That body mold has actually been used many times for different characters. Toybiz Bullseye, Toybiz Moonknight, old Hasbro Union Jack, Hasbro Fantomex to name some.

The problem with the torso is that when I put it at pictured above, it would look kinda ok from the front, but from the side his back is unnaturally arched, and if I push it one click forward, he’ll be hunching forward with neck kinda stretch in front.

You really need to be good at posing this figure for display or photography.

Above is the fist from House of M Spidey, but all Spideys which uses the pizza Spidey body mold has the same type of hands, so the fist of the 80th Anniversary Big Time is the same as House of M above.

You can also see from the picture above that the fist of the Big Time let down is unnaturally longer. So is his webshooting hands as seen in the picture below.

The pizza Spidey body mold of the 80th Anniversary Spidey can do a better squatting pose than the Big Time let down. I prefer the pizza Spidey body mold over the Big Time let down body mold.

TL;DR

Marvel Legends - Big Time Spider-man (Rocket Racoon BAF Wave) vs Big Time Spider-man (80th Anniversary)

Big Time Spider-man (Rocket Raccoon BAF Wave):

+ Sculpted eyes

– Green paintwork (not the green lines) over the black-based body does not look good

– Green lines/symbol at the chest and back not as accurate to the comics

– Elongated fist and webshooting hands

Big Time Spider-man (80th Anniversary):

+ Wider, slightly sculpted eyes

+ Pizza Spidey body mold

+ Comic accurate green lines on chest and back

+ Comes with 3 pairs of hands; fist, wall-crawling and webshooting

+ Comes with a strand of web

My Verdict

Marvel Legends - Big Time Spider-man (Rocket Racoon BAF Wave) vs Big Time Spider-man (80th Anniversary)

The 80th Anniversary Big Time Spider-man wins it big time! The first version is such a disappointment it was dubbed Big Time let down Spidey, and will forever hold its spot as a let down.

The 80th Anniversary version trumps it in every way; more accessories, updated pizza Spidey body mold, better paintwork.
