Marvel Legends – Hasbro Warlock BAF Wave Cyclops vs Toybiz X-men Classics Cyclops

The Figures

Here we have the two Jim Lee Cyclops, released about 13 years apart (Toybiz Cyclops 2004, Hasbro Cyclops 2017). This costume is the most popular costume for Cyclops, and is the costume used in the 90s X-men Animated series. The Toybiz Cyclops come with a diorama, a shooting weapon of sort. I don’t have it though, and it is not a trademark weapon of Cyclops or anything, so didn’t bother hunting it down.

Back view of the figures. You can see how scrawny the Toybiz Cyclops looks. As per all Bucky Cap mold, the Hasbro Cyclops has that one useless hole at the back. Toybiz Cyclops has 2 small holes which is meant for the weapon accessory.

Differences

The body mold is of course the most obvious difference. The Hasbro Cyclops uses the Bucky Cap body mold. The belt and strap is a separate piece and can be taken off, as opposed to the Toybiz Cyclops which has it sculpted on. The yellow straps around the thighs and top of boots are also separate pieces for the Hasbro Cyclops, which is actually annoying as it keeps on slipping and does not stay in place. A little glue helps with this. Same goes for the yellow straps around the wrist; they are separate pieces too, but at least they stay in place.

Both the head sculpt looks great to me. The visor is supposed to light up red for the Toybiz Cyclops when its weapon accessory (which i don’t have) is attached to the 2 holes at the back of the body. Don’t think it would work for any of the Toybiz Cyclops though as the figure is just too old and the bulb probably doesn’t work anymore.

The head joint is also a downside for the Toybiz Cyclops; it can only rotate horizontally. The Hasbro Cyclops has a hinged ball joint for the head, so it can articulate in any direction.

TL;DR

Hasbro Cyclops:

– uses the Bucky Cap body mold which is more suitable for the character

– nice head sculpt

– belt/shoulder strap is a separate piece and can be removed.

– yellow wrist strap, thigh strap and the strap at the top of the boots are separate pieces which can move out of position. Need some glue to be fixed in place.

Toybiz Cyclops:

– nice head sculpt

– sculpted belt and body straps

– all other straps are sculpted

– scrawny body

– head can only rotate sideways, unable to tilt up or down

My Verdict

The Toybiz Cyclops used to be the definitive Jim Lee Cyclops and held its position for around a decade. It was pricey back then in the secondary market. With the release of the new Hasbro Cyclops, the price for the Toybiz has dropped tremendously. I think very few people still prefer the Toybiz Cyclops. For me, its a hands down win for Hasbro Cyclops. However, if you are searching for it now, it would most probably cost more that retail price in the secondary market (ebay, amazon, toy sale forums/fb page)
