Marvel Legends – Hasbro Spider-man 2099 (Hobgoblin BAF Wave) vs Hasbro Spider-man 2099 (Spider-man Origins)

The Figures

These are the two Hasbro released Spider-man 2099 in his original suit. Toybiz also released a version of it, someday I’ll do a comparison for it.

The Spider-man 2099 from the Spider-man Origins series was one of the figures from the early times of Hasbro. As such, figures from that time aren’t really that great to me, and this one is no different. The figure comes with a cloth cape and a base which is pretty much useless and looks out of place to me.

The Hobgoblin wave Spider-man 2099 comes with a rubber cape. It does not have any other accessories beside the BAF part that comes with it.

Differences

The two most prominent differences are the body mold and the cape.

The cloth cape of the Origins Spidey 2099 looks messy to me. It is big, with tethered edges and messy webline prints, and has a rubber band to attach it around each armpit and each elbow of the figure. It doesn’t look comic accurate to me. The rubber translucent cape of the newer Hobgoblin Spidey 2099 looks more subtle and sleek. It is also easy to attach and remove.

Next, the head sculpt. The Hobgoblin Spidey 2099 has the red part of the costume design sculpted on the face, and the rest of the red designed were painted on the body. For the Origins Spidey 2099, all the red part of the costume design were painted. The red colour itself is also more dull than the Hobgoblin Spidey 2099. The tilt of the head for the Origins Spidey 2099 is awkward.

The body mold of the Origins Spidey 2099 has very limited articulation, and the posture of the mold was such that it is impossible for it to stand straight. The limited articulation also means poses are veryyyy limited. The Hobgoblin Spidey 2099 has the Pizza Spidey body mold, therefore the articulation is very good; double hinge elbow and knee joints, ankle rockers, butterfly shoulder joints.

Lastly, the arms. How can Spidey 2099 not have those claws at the elbow? The arrow head design, and the clawed hands makes the Hobgoblin Spidey 2099 way more comic accurate than the Origins Spidey 2099.

TL;DR

Hobgoblin wave Spider-man 2099:

– red part of the mask is sculpted

– translucent cape is more subtle and sleek

– highly articulated (uses pizza Spidey body mold)

– better colours; red colour is more comic accurate and the blue paintwork is glossy

– claws at the elbow and red arrow design at the hands (comic accurate)

– clawed hands

Spider-man Origins Spider-man 2099:

– sucks (i actually have nothing positive to write about it)

Verdict

Basically I sold away the Origins Spidey 2099 without any hesitation after this review. It was a good (but non-poseable except vanilla pose) stand in for the character for a long while. The newer Hobgoblin Spidey 2099 is really awesome. I really like its poseability and the glossy finish does make it look futuristic. Hobgoblin wave Spider-man 2099 for the win!
